*Height at shoulder of moose can reach 6-1/2 - 7-1/2'
*A mature moose can weigh 1200 - 1500 lbs
*A female moose gives birth (in the spring) to 1-2 calves after a 230 day gestation
*Moose are the world's largest deer
*Moose can easily run 35 mph. They can also swim 10 miles
*Moose antlers are not what you should fear, but their sharp hooves. Hooves are their first line of defense
*Each year in Alaska there are more moose related deaths than bear related deaths
*Only mature bulls (male moose) has antlers. They shed these before winter and they grow back in the spring
*Antlers can reach a width of 6' and can weigh up to 44 lbs! This is NOT a moose but a deer! We came back from having dinner out and this deer was in one of our campsights. Ray took this picture for me from the driver's seat (that's why you see his mirror and arm in the picture).
Also, Ray was kind enough to stop and let me out to take the first picture when we were driving back up the gravel road to the campground! There are 3 bull moose there, but two of them were laying down. I'm pretty sure this is the same 3 that I saw yesterday. Ray & Glenda think they may even be the 3 Glenda took pictures of last year in the same area. There were 2 younger ones and 1 older and that's what these guys look like! Couldn't get them to come any closer...heck, I couldn't get the 2 laying down to get up at all! Oh well...there's always tomorrow!
